Howe Park Shooting Injures Four Victims Wounded in the Arden-Arcade Section of Sacramento County
Officials in Sacramento County are looking into a violent incident that erupted Saturday evening at Howe Park as authorities were dispersing a large unauthorized gathering of hundreds of attendees.
Prior to the Shooting
Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies initially got calls about the park at approximately half past six in the evening after getting calls of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. After that, a second caller reported mentioning an alleged brawl happening near the park.
Air support flew over the park but came back with no confirmation of a fight. However, authorities discovered that hundreds of people had congregated at Howe Park without any permit or approval.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Law enforcement personnel started clearing the unauthorized gathering by encircling the gathering and issuing commands over loudspeakers directing the hundreds present to go home. Nearly 15 minutes were given for the gathering to break up.
As the crowd was being cleared that an estimated 20 to 25 shots were discharged. The barrage of gunfire triggered a stampede. Law enforcement wasted no time in identifying shooting victims.
Four People Shot
Altogether, four shooting victims were located with gunshot injuries. The four individuals — a group of one female and three male victims each apparently in their early to late twenties — were rushed to Cottage Way shooting Sacramento area medical facilities. Doctors and nurses noted that two victims sustained immediate injuries, one sustained moderate wounds, and one victim's wounds were minor. As of last report, each of the four victims was stable.
Sacramento fire crews provided support and provided medical assistance shooting victims at the park.
Physical Evidence
Most of the gunfire seemed to have occurred near Cottage Way adjacent to the Home Depot store situated at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Detectives recovered more spent casings throughout the Cottage Way area. Bullet damage were noted in the metal fencing adjacent to the nearby Home Depot. This ballistic evidence indicated that at least one of the shooters had been discharging rounds toward the south from along Cottage Way in the direction of the Home Depot. The nearby Home Depot was locked down while law enforcement worked the area. CSI investigators and detectives stayed at the location through the early morning hours.
Suspects Detained
Details gathered via scanner audio confirmed that a Kia vehicle was intercepted in Solano County. Four suspects were taken into custody. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to Solano County to bring the suspects back for questioning. Video evidence made clear that two shooters had been involved.
